First of all, I know Malu Fernandez through her writings at People Asia. I read her articles and I loved how she defends fat women. She can be nasty at times but all in all, the whole feel of her writing is witty. I regularly bought People Asia when I was still in my fellowship training at St. Luke's, the publisher was a patient of my boss(Manong Max passed away after battling renal failure for 6 years).
Lately the most recent issues were ho-hum( I think the last one I got was with Lea Salonga and her kid on the cover)and since Manong Max's passing, the magazine seemed blah. I failed to get the June 2007 issue which apparently contained insults against the OFWs written by Malu.
I read the infamous articles via links from several blog sites and I was flabbergasted. She was so mean and rude. With those articles, Malu Fernandez crossed the line. To have an "acerbic wit" is fine, but rudeness and snobbery runs smack of bigotry. Yeah, she's free to write whatever she wants, and boy did she get what she deserves - an honest to goodness slapping from her countrymen.
To think that I even bought stuff from her boutique at Gateway...well not anymore...My aunt patronized that store and she is an OFW. Take that Malu-take that, an OFW actually helping you to earn a living!
